Week 9 of the NFL betting season showed just how skilled oddsmakers are at creating spreads. While favorites went 10-2 straight up, they were only 5-6-1 against the spread after Sunday’s games.
Betting against the spread at top online betting sites always adds a little more intrigue and excitement to an already action-packed sport. Oakland and Cleveland were the only underdogs that were able to cover the spread and also win outright.
The Cleveland Browns put on the most shocking display of the weekend. Entering Sunday, there were 4.5 point underdogs against the New England Patriots. The Browns not only won the game, they destroyed the Patriots. New England entered the game with the best record in the NFL at 6-1. However, they could not stop Browns running back Peyton Hillis. The Browns trounced the Patriots 34-14 and went over the predicted total of 44.
Both the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions also looked like underdogs who would be able to pull out the outright victory on Sunday. The Cardinals were beating the Minnesota Vikings by 14 points with less than four minutes left in the game when Brett Favre orchestrated a classic comeback to tie the game and eventually win in overtime. The Lions were up on the Jets by 10 with three minutes left, but could not hang on. Both of these close games went over the predicted total.
Week 9 proved to be a high scoring week in the NFL. Bettors who wagered on the over had a great day. If you took the over in every game, you finished 9-3 on Sunday. Every single game on the schedule totaled at least 35 points, but no game went over 52 points.
Only three games went under the oddsmakers predicted total on Sunday. The Buffalo Bills 22-19 loss to the Chicago Bears didn’t reach the total of 42 points, the New Orleans Saints dismantling of the Carolina Panthers narrowly missed the total of 40.5 and the Baltimore Ravens 26-10 road victory over the Miami Dolphins didn’t reach the predicted total of 41.
